Steve Okonski has been servicing keyboard instruments for the past eighteen years, where he started as an apprentice with pipe organ builders Jerroll Adams and Richard Houghten in southeast Michigan. It was in their shop that he gained an appreciation for the attention to detail necessary to become a master technician and has continued to work remotely for them. After moving to Brooklyn, NY in 2010, Steve began an apprenticeship with Brian Whiton, RPT of Big Wrench Piano Care where he learned all aspects of the piano servicing business - from basic tuning and general regulation to complete grand and upright rebuilds, restringing, and soundboard repair. While working at Big Wrench Piano Care, Steve helped grow the electric piano wing of the business. This included the regulation, tuning, and rebuilding of Wurlitzer, Rhodes, and Hohner mechanical action keyboards. Since relocating to Asheville, he’s set up his own shop and is excited to provide his experience and expertise to the fine folks and musicians of Asheville and beyond.
